General Info about Costa Mesa:

Costa Mesa is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 108,724 at the 2000 census. Since its incorporation in 1953, the city has grown from a semi-rural farming community of 16,840 to a suburban city with an economy based on retail, commerce and light manufacturing. Costa Mesa location: In southern California in Orange County next to Newport Beach and the Pacific Ocean. It is 37 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 88 miles north of San Diego. Other nearby communities include Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, Huntington Beach, San Joaquin Hills, Newport Coast, Westminster and Irvine. The climate for Costa Mesa is mild. Southern California is known for its great weather. Costa Mesa, located near the Pacific Ocean coast has nothing less. Cooling ocean breezes keep the hot air inland. In the winter, mild temperatures make the city a comfortable place to be. However, offshore flow can sometimes bring hot desert air to the coast in the summer, which is the most likely time for the temperature in Costa Mesa to exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). On very rare occasions, readings of 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) have been recorded. The rainy season in the city of Costa Mesa generally begins in the later part of October and runs through the first part of April. During this time period, about 11 to 12 in ches of rain falls on the city, but the amounts can vary quite considerably. For example, during a La Niña year in 2001 - 2002, only 3 1/2 inches of rain fell from July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002. That was the driest rainy season on record. The current rainy season is not too far behind. On the other hand, years like 2004 - 2005, with over 25 inches of rain measured in Costa Mesa; typically occur during El Niño winters. Snow is not a concern in the city. In the past 10 years, snow has not fallen once. However, freezing temperatures have occurred on a couple of occasions, usually every 3 to 4 years or so. The freezes are almost always light and generally last an hour or two at most. In the fall and winter, hot and dry Santa Ana winds from the higher deserts of southern California sometimes make their way down to the city. While they do not tend to get as strong as areas further inland, they sometimes cause notable damage. A particularly strong Santa Ana wind event in November 2006 removed many shingles off of the roofs of various buildings in the area, as well as knocking off several tree branches.
